Reptiles and Amphibians
Frequently Asked Questions
When will you have live reptiles available?
We are currently working on having live reptiles available for sale ASAP!
Our team are taking the set up and sourcing of our live reptiles seriously, and are working hard behind the scenes to launch the reptile side of our shop.
We'll make sure to have updates on our website, Facebook and Instagram as soon as reptiles are available.
Do you have live bugs for sale?
We are currently breeding crickets on site with the goal of having these up for sale soon. We are also working on breeding mealworms in the future.
We have prioritised the New Zealand black field cricket Teleogryllus commodus as it makes for a great diet base for all insectivorous and omnivorous reptiles available in New Zealand. We have also fed them to large carnivorous fish in the past with great success!
We also have a range of quality dried and gel premix foods which can supplement a balanced diet. We take care to choose brands which prioritise insect protein and quality vegetables rather than grains and fillers.
Do I need special lights for my pet reptile or amphibian?
To put it simply, yes, reptiles do need special UVB lights.
When reptiles sit under a suitable UVB light UVB rays reach the skin and trigger a natural process which produces vitamin D3.
Reptiles cannot properly use calcium without vitamin D3. Reptiles need this calcium to build and maintain strong bones, healthy muscles, and for proper nerve function.
Without enough calcium a wide variety of issues will develop.
Your reptile will also need a separate heat lamp to allow for basking, with the exact temperatures required dependent on which species you have.
Choosing the exact light needed for your reptile set up can be overwhelming! We are happy to discuss this topic and help out anyone who needs more information or guidence.
What is a good starter pet reptile?
We highly recommend leopard geckos as an introduction to keeping pet reptiles. These beautiful geckos are charismatic and smaller than the other available reptiles, making them easier to house correctly for most people.
Of course other reptiles can make interesting pets too, so feel free to chat to us for more information or help choosing!
Why only fish and reptiles? Will you sell other animal supplies?
We are focusing on the weird and wonderful side of pet keeping as long term hobbyists ourselves with a passion for these creatures.
At this stage our livestock and products will be centred on tropical fish, reptiles and amphibians. Many of our products may be also useful to invertebrate and bird keepers.
We are unlikely to be found selling cat and dog products, thankfully there are already plenty of companies covering this in New Zealand!
